7. How does MMS work? |
|
MMS works implementing a combination of WAP and SMS technologies. The process of sending an MMS message to another mobile phone is as follows:
First of all, the sending device encodes the message content.
It is then forwarded to the carrier’s MMS store and forward server i.e., MMSC.
In case, the receiver is on the other carrier the message is forwarded to the recipient’s carrier via the internet.
On receiving the message, MMSC checks the receiver’s handset for compatibility.
If the handset is MMS compatible, MMSC extracts the content and makes it available as a dynamically generated URL link.
An MMS notification is generated by MMSC, which is sent through WAP. This notification message contains URL pointer to the dynamically generated MMS content.
The recipient initiates the data connection and retrieves the MMS content.
If the receiver’s handset does not support the MMS service the URL is sent in the form of a normal text message.
